As I mentioned before, on our journey through Murphys, we had recommended places we’d like to visit to El Jefe before we all arrived. I’d been to Tanner last year when I visited Murphys on my own before the Wine Blogger Conference and I certainly wanted to check them out again. Last year I got to meet three generations of Tanner women which was really cool and I had my picture taken with the 2nd generation…we continued that tradition this year!
I tried to take a few more pictures this year, but the tasting room is quite tiny and we had about 15 people squeezed in there! Scott, who also makes the wine at Tanner, hopped behind the bar to help out (come to think of it….he did this every where we went!) and off we went with our tasting!
2007 Vermentino: $18. Earth, truffle, floral, honey, lemon, dry.
2008 Vermentino Viognier: $20. Coconut, pineapple, apricot, floral, tangerine, tart, lemon, light, crisp, really refreshing. I took one home.
2006 Syrah: $2. Berries, dark, oak, spice, cream, pepper, red, dark, chocolate.
2005 Mélange de Mére: $22. Dried raisins, black plums, very dark, tannic, smoke, big wine.
2006 Mélange de Mére: $27. Floral, roses, pepper, dark cherry, dark plum, clove, pepper, spice, tart berries. I bought one bottle.
2006 Petite Verdot: $28. Smoke, vanilla, cream, red plums, chocolate, cherry, anise, fruit, red. I think this might have been a touch too warm.
2006 Petite Sirah: $35. Blueberries, spice, pepper, cream, blue fruit, brown sugar, tannic, very young, long finish.
I’ll keep my eye out on Tanner. They own vineyards with awesome fruit, so I’m always excited to see what they do with the grapes they keep for their own line. Sadly, there were so many of us, that it was hard to talk about how they were doing, what their production goals were, and such. That’s ok though, I’ll be back!
